Announcements 6-6-17:
The Simley girls golf team finished out a record season on Monday by accomplishing another first for the program, the highest ever finish in the section tournament. Highlights from the two day tournament were plentiful for the Spartans. Freshman Anna Ahern posted her two best rounds of the year, including her personal best as a Spartan on Friday that helped the Spartan team earn their entry into the finals. Four of the six team members improved on their Friday scores in the finals on Monday. This included Rachael Wolfe who powered her way around the course, hitting towering drives that caught the attention of everyone watching. Junior Britta Iverson, who heard lots of cheers from the crowd as she birdied 3 of the last 11 holes. Along with Senior Captain Annika Iverson, who got sweet revenge against the unforgiving green side bunker on the 17th hole when she feathered a perfect sand shot across the green, nestling near by the difficult back pin location. Senior Captain Emma Johnson claimed the shot of the day, coming within inches of holing out an iron shot from 100 yards on the par five 6th hole, leaving a tap in birdie that helped her shoot one of the best rounds of the tournament. The record team effort was highlighted by the record play of Seventh Grader Isabella McCauley, who’s brilliant two day play allowed her to capture medalist honors for the tournament, and advance to the State tournament next week at Bunker hills. Congratulations to the entire team on a season well played, and good luck to Isabella next week at State.

The Simley Boys Golf Team entered the Conference Championships firmly ensconced in the middle of the pack and emerged in the same position. The Spartans were led by Junior Jamie Warrick who fired a blistering 75 riding the back of a hot putter and pin point accuracy. Senior Carson Westra came achingly close to breaking the barrier (80) as his first putt on the closing hole burned the edge. Junior Evan Schultz's (81) towering drives were the longest that this reporter has ever witnessed in the Metro East and Senior Jason Gabriel rounded out the team scoring with a Houdini-like 83. Congratulations to Jamie Warrick for capturing All-Conference honors with his fine round, while Sophomore Ben Borchard garnered All-Conference Honorable Mention with steady play all season.
The Simley girls golfers took to the links at Highland National on Wednesday for the final contest of the conference season looking to accomplish a rare feat in high school golf, an undefeated conference season, and that is exactly what they did. The Spartan's bested the second place team in the field by an impressive 33 strokes, leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind who deserved the conference title. Highlights from the day included an impressive drive by freshman Anna Ahern on the par four ninth hole that made spectators wonder if she was playing by herself. An iron off the tee on the par 3 8th hole by Britta Iverson that locked onto the pin as if guided by GPS. A sand shot by Annika Iverson from the green side bunker on the 4th hole that would have made any tour pro proud. A tee shot by Rachael Wolfe that almost reached the par 4 17th green. Play so steady from Emma Johnson that many in the crowd wondered if she was playing in her sleep, and so many up-downs from Isabella McCauley the entire course was talking about her short game. Congratulations to Britta Iverson- All Conference Honorable Mention. Rachael Wolfe- All Conference. Annika Iverson- All Conference. Emma Johnson- All Conference, and Isabella McCauley- All Conference and Conference Player of the year. Well done team, undefeated conference champions sounds pretty good!

On a cold and gray Inver Grove afternoon on May 18th at Inver Wood Golf Course the Simley Boys Golf team was hot and determined to hold its own against Metro East opponents South St. Paul and Tartan. After getting rained out of its last three events, your Spartans served notice that their home course was sacred as the linksters vanquished their rivals led by 8th grader Zach Painter who regained the bragging rights in his family with an uneventful 38, low maintenance just like the coach likes. With good supporting rounds from Senior Jason Gabriel (40), Junior James Royce (41), and Sophomore Ben Borchard (42), all played very well on a day with tough scoring conditions and greens like molasses. It was another great team effort as the season has been filled with different heroes every match, as the score was tied with South St. Paul and nails were bitten until Zach posted his score in the last threesome of the da

Congratulations to the Simley Boys Varsity Golf for finishing 1st place against Hastings & Sibley at Dakota Pines Golf Course yesterday. The Simley Boys Golf Team travelled to Dakota Pines Golf Course where Hasting hosted Henry Sibley and your Spartans. Coming off a tough outing at Oak Glen, the Spartans golfers battled swirling winds, tight tree-lined fairways, and hugely sloping greens (which gave Hastings a significant home course advantage), as well as questioning confidence. The three-way match featured birdies, too few pars, bogies, and the dreaded other on a course the host decided to play from the tips (as long as possible). The Spartans fought all the elements, mental and physical challenges, and when the scores were tallied, Simley found itself with a wonderful one-stroke victory over Hastings to capture the match and three important points in the Metro East golf standings. Was it Junior Evan Schultz’s five straight pars to finish the match after some difficult holes (41), Sophomore Ben “The Torch” Borchard’s 25 foot snake on his final hole (41), Senior Jason Gabriel’s two birdies (43 while borrowing his coaches driver), or Senior Carson Westra’s hot start to his round (45), that was the difference in the match? No, it was just a great team effort – just like it is every day with this team.
Announcements 5-2-17:
The Simley girls golf team had a wonderful day at the Pioneer Invite at Hillcrest Golf Club. Although the tournament was shortened from 18 holes to just 9 to accommodate the weather, there was not a shortage of Simley accomplishments. Simley finished 2nd overall out of the 8 teams in the field, losing by only 4 strokes to the formidable Visitation golf team. Junior Britta Iverson left with a medal around her neck for her 7th place overall finish, and 7th grader Isabella McCauley left with a medal and a trophy after shooting an impressive 38 in the difficult conditions and finishing in 1st place overall.

Simley High School Girls Varsity Golf beat Hastings High School 175-196Simley hosted their first home match of the year against conference rival Hastings at Inver Wood on Monday. Going into the match on Monday both teams were undefeated in head-to-head conference play, but Simley proved to be more than ready to defend their home course. Despite the difficult windy and cool conditions, Simley put in one of their best team performances this season. Simley finished the nine with three of the top four scores. Britta Iverson finished in fourth place overall, Captain Annika Iverson finished second, and Isabella McCauley shot a 38 to gain medalist honors. Simley will face the entire conference on Thursday for mid-conference at Keller.

Simley High School Girls Varsity Golf finishes 1st place!Monday brought beautiful weather and calm conditions at Rich Valley for the 4th annual Tri-City Championship against Henry Sibley and South St. Paul. Simley continued their winning ways with all 6 players contributing good scores to seal the victory. Simley was led by Senior Emma Johnson’s 2nd place overall finish, and medalist Isabella McCauley who shot a 38. Simley is back in action tomorrow when they will face the entire conference for the first time this year at Oak Marsh.
Simley High School Boys Varsity Golf finishes 1st place! The sun shone long and strong as the Simley Boys Golf Team brought home the first place team trophy in the Simley “High Noon” Shootout at Inver Wood Golf Course on Monday, April 17th. The weather was beautiful and the golf gorgeous as 8 Spartan golfers combined for a 301 total, averaging just over 75 in the 3rd annual best ball competition, besting South St. Paul and Tartan. Ben “The Torch” Borchard fired his second in a row 75 (matching his personal best from Friday against Eagan) to win the event by a stroke over SSP’s future division 1 golfer Pat Ravn and take medalist honors. The Torch cemented the win with a gutsy up and down on the 18th hole. 3rd through 5th place medal winners included Senior Jason Gabriel and Juniors Jamie Warrick and Evan Schultz who found themselves tied for 3rd place honors. Rounding out the team champions were Senior Carson Westra, Juniors James Royce and Yeemeng Yang, and freshman Charlie Gustafson.

2016 State Tournament Results
Sometimes it takes the state tournament to find the best 18 holes of golf in Simley Boys Golf history. Congratulations to Harrison Cooper who in his final round as a Spartan shot a three under par 69 on the second day at Bunker Hills to capture 2nd place in this year’s Minnesota state golf tournament. Because of torrential rains late on Tuesday which only allowed 13 holes of play, Harrison completed his last five holes early Wednesday morning for a solid 76 and 21st place. After a nice nap in the back of the school van, Harrison proceeded to make clutch putt after clutch putt (PGA performance 12 putts on the back nine) in howling and swirling winds. After 144 strokes and 35 holes and one evil three foot Christmas Tree, Harrison found himself sitting on the fringe of the 18th green with a sweeping right to left 50-foot putt. When the ball finished its victory lap around the hole and dropped in, the crowd exploded, his arms reached to the sky, the mother cried, the father beamed, and Harrison Cooper had played the best round in Simley Golf history at the best possible time. |

2016 Sectional Results
Congratulations to Senior Golfer Harrison Cooper who shot 76-77 in the Section 3AA Championship to finish 4th and advance to the State Golf Tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday at Bunker Hills Golf Course. On a very challenging day and course, Harrison gutted out two qualifying rounds without his best swing to grind out a second chance in as many years to bring a State Golf Championship home to the Spartans. Congratulations to Junior Golfer Emma Johnson who backed up the best round of her life on Friday, a 90 from the extremely difficult women's tees at Bunker Hills with another outstanding 90! Emma's two day total of 180 left her just out of the state tournament in the very competitive 3AAA Girls Section, but is one of the best two-day totals in Simley Golf history. |
The Spartan Girls Golf team finished the conference season yesterday at the very challenging Keller Golf Course. The members of the team all performed well during the entire conference season, and found themselves right in the mix of the very tightly contested conference heading into yesterdays contest. They finished the season a little short of their title dreams, but should all be proud of the way they finished the season. Congratulations to Emma Johnson and Annika Iverson on their season, both players received all-conference honors yesterday! Go Spartans! Announcements 5/27/2016 (match 5/26/2016)
The latest Metro East Conference Champion is the Simley Boys Golf Team! The Spartans captured their first conference championship in the history of the golf program at Keller Golf Course by shooting their best team score of the season and edging Hill-Murray by one stroke to win the Conference Finals. As other teams helped the Spartans by finishing ahead of league leading St. Thomas, the totals vaulted Simley into the conference championship. In the rain and wind, Senior Harrison Cooper led the way with an even par finish, Freshman Ben Borchard added a 79 with Sophomore Evan Schultz hard on his heels with a grinding 80. And with a gutsy finish, Sophomore Jamie Warrick shot 75, only the best round of his yet short life, which included one of the greatest pars on the penultimate hole his coach had ever seen: Drive into the trees, punch out way over the green on the next tee almost out of bounds, beautiful touch on a flop shot to a tough pin, and one of the sweetest ten foot putts you'll ever see. Seniors Chuyi Yang and Tyler Prifrel also played well in support of the championship. Announcements 5/26/2016 (match 5/25/2016)
Congratulations to the Simley Boys Golf team for winning the St. Croix Lutheran Match Play Invitational at Troy Burne Golf Course. The Spartans won because all 8 varsity golfers won at least one match, most won two matches, and Junior Jason Gabriel, 8th grader Zach Sayner and Senior Harrison Cooper won three matches each to win their respective flights in dominating fashion. In winning the championship flight, Harrison Cooper jarred a hole-in-one on the 15th hole to be the first ever Spartan golfer to score a hole-in-one in a Varsity competition. Congratulations to the Simley Girls golf team for their performance Friday at the Dakota County Championship. Gail force winds, rain, and freezing temperatures did not stop the team from putting in a solid performance at Emerald Greens. Great scores were posted by juniors Emma Johnson and Annika Iverson, but the day belonged to Freshman Rachael Wolfe who was able to ignore the difficult conditions and put in her best score of the season and the team’s best score of the day. In the notoriously difficult field Simley finished in the middle of the pack, but well ahead of conference rivals Henry Sibley and South Saint Paul. Well done. Announcements 5/16/2016 (match 5/13/2016)
The Simley Girls Golf team found a dark and dismal day to take on Henry Sibley at Inverwood on Wednesday. The day got darker and darker as Sibley's medalist was seemingly leading her team to an upset victory over the Spartans. The players were grinding through the soaking rain and bad bounces, but even after Juniors Emma Johnson and Annika Iverson as well as Freshman Rachel Wolfe came in with solid scores in the low 50's to match the temperature, the Spartans found themselves down 15 strokes. While the Spartans coaches were composing their concession speeches, in strode Sophomore Britta Iverson, who somehow in horrifying conditions fired the best round of her competitive golfing life. Britta brought home a smooth 47 to erase their opponents lead and give the Spartans their best comeback win of the season. Announcements 5/12/2016 (match 5/11/2016)
Gutsy performance by the Simley Boys Golf team in some of the worst weather of the season at the Mid-Conference tournament at Oak Glen Golf Course. With the wind whipping and the temperature falling while the putts were not, the Spartans cobbled together three scores in the lower 80's by Seniors Harrison Cooper and Chuyi Yang, who were joined by Sophomore Evan Schultz who battled back from a very tough opening hole. Things looked bleaker than the gray skies until Freshman Ben Borchard, who his teammates call "The Torch" fired a 79 to finish 5th in the tournament and clinch 3rd place to keep his team among the leaders in the Metro East Conference. (4-27-16)
Great Job Simley Girls Golf Team! On Wednesday, Simley hosted the Metro East Conference at Inverwood and came away with a gutsy second place finish, bested only by perennial champion Hill-Murray. Quality shot making was on display as Junior Annika Iverson and Sophomore Rachael Wolfe finished with solid 50's with Sophomore Britta Iverson close on their heels with a 51, including an up and down for par on the final hole to grab second place away from a strong Tartan squad. But the day belonged to Senior Maya Bernstein who turned the day around with a beautiful 47 to fuel the charge of the Spartans. (4-21-16)
Wow to the Simley Boys Golf team for taking out pre-season conference champion pick St. Thomas Academy and an always strong Mahtomedi team at Loggers Trail Golf Course in the kind of gale winds you normally only see coming off the North Sea at the British Open. Led by an extremely boring 38 by medalist Senior Harrison Cooper, no one else on the course had better than 41, the trio of Seniors Chuyi Yang, Tyler Prifrel, and Sophomore Jamie Warrick posted remarkable 42's on this demanding day, highlighted by Mr. Yang's chip in for birdie on the toughest hole on the course moments after a wonderfully insightful tip from his coach. Way to go Junior Harrison Cooper. Harrison won the the Section 3AAA Golf Championship posting a two-day total of 150, with a second round 73 to advance to the Minnesota State Golf Tournament. His one over par score was very impressive at the very challenging Bunker Hills Golf Course, where the state championship will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday. Senior Aaron Leafgren battled hard, but fell just short of advancing, while on the girls side Seniors Madi Moland, Olivia Rud and Freshman Annika Iverson matched their first round scores, while not advancing on a very hard course set-up for women, all of them posted excellent scores for themselves.
The Simley boys golf team got back on track on Friday at Indian Hills Country Club with victories over Mahtomedi and North. After a week of playing something vaguely resembling golf, the Spartans were led by Junior Harrison Cooper who captured medalist honors with a hot putter shooting 38. But even after Seniors Brady Hayes and Aaron Leafgren shot 41 and 42 on a very tough golf course, it took Junior Chuyi Yang, who survived a double shot of water hazards on the same hole, to shoot a courageous 40 to turn a two stroke deficit to Mahtomedi into a two stroke win for Simley Golf. (5-18-15)
The Spartans Boys Golf Team started the second half of its season on Tuesday tied for second place with St. Thomas and hot on the heels of Hill-Murray. Simley hosted the Cadets at Inverwood and found itself trailing by a single shot when Senior Jake Suchy, who exiled himself to the fifth spot in the lineup (four out of six scores count), brought home a two-over par 38 to seal the victory and share medalist honors with Junior Harrison Cooper. Senior Aaron Leafgren was close on their heels with a surf and turf 39 and Junior Chuyi Yang rounded out the scoring. Golf can be very lonely, but the 2015 Spartans continue to demonstrate great team commitment in the most individual of sports. (5-5-15)
Youth shall be served for the Simley Boys Golf Team. At the prestigious and highly challenging White Bear Yacht Club Country Club, the Spartans brought the course to its knees in the best ball invitational. Although the two-man teams of straight hitting Juniors Harrison Cooper and Chuyi Yang and long hitting Seniors Jake Suchy and Brady Hayes shot 75 & 76, it took the Freshmen duo of calm Jamie Warrick and fiery Evan Schultz shooting 78 to provide the tie-breaker win to bring home the trophy for Simley. (5-4-15)Another solid performance for the Simley Boys Golf team at Southview Country Club on Thursday. Although the Spartans fell to perennial conference champions Hill-Murray by just two strokes, the team easily defeated Henry Sibley on its home course. Junior Harrison Cooper took medalist honors with a ho-hum even par 36 while Junior Chuyi Yang continued to elevate his game with steady play and Senior Aaron Leafgren survived double and triple bogies and a few wrong fairways to anchor the victory. But it was the always exciting Senior Bubba Hayes who shot 39 playing his last six holes in even par who sealed the deal. (4-26-15)
Great job Simley Boys Linksters. Oak Glen hosted the Metro East Mid-Conference Golf tournament on Wednesday and saw the Spartans tie for first place by going low with a season best 307 team score - a 77 average score among all four golfers. Senior Aaron Leafgren and Junior Harrison Cooper both had very interesting 75's - Aaron in exciting fashion saving par from the water and Harrison in boring fashion hitting 16 of 18 greens. Late blossoming Junior Chuyi Yang was right behind with a hot putting 76 and Bubba Hayes rounded out the scoring with his typical strategy of visiting all parts of the golf course. (4-25-15)
The weather was frigid but the Simley Boys Golf team was hot as the Spartans defeated Metro East foes Tartan and North with a season best 153 team total at Tartan Park on Wednesday. Ski hats, gloves, and many layers saw Senior Aaron Leafgren find fairways and greens again to capture medalist honors with three birdies and a 37, edging out Junior Harrison Cooper who bombed his drives but found the slower greens not to his liking while carding a two over 38. Rounding out the great play were Senior Jake Suchy and Junior Chuyi Yang who fired bookend 39's. Senior Sam Mergens also picked up a conference point for the dominating Spartans. (4-22-15)
It was a beautiful day at Inver Wood yesterday as the Simley Girls Golf Team hosted Richfield in their second match of the year. A short handed Richfield could not keep pace with the Spartans who notched their second win of the season. The team was led by Olivia Rud who made clutch up-downs on the last two holes to gain medalist honors, and Madi Moland who came in solidly in 2nd place. (4-17-15)
Congratulations to the Spartan Boys Golf Team for its dominating victory over South St. Paul and Mahtomedi at Inverwood on a perfect spring day. The perfection carried over to Junior Harrison Cooper carding a one under par 35 to win Medalist honors. Senior Jake Suchy followed with a smooth 38 and Junior Chuyi Yang and the surprisingly steady Senior Brady Hayes closed out the scoring for the Spartans. (4-14-15)
Congratulations to the Simley Boys Golf Team for its arctic win against rivals South St. Paul and Tartan at Southview Country Club on Thursday. Braving temperatures in the 30's and sleet, the Spartans beat SSP by 12 strokes and Tartan by a bunch. Senior Aaron Leafgren took medalist honors with a cold 40, followed by Seniors Jake Suchy and Bubba Hayes with 41 and 43. Junior Harrison Cooper put the icicle on the cake with a bitter 43.

Senior Aaron Leafgren took medalist honors with a cold 40, followed by Seniors Jake Suchy and Bubba Hayes with 41 and 43. Junior Harrison Cooper put the icicle on the cake with a bitter 43.

The back and forth battle between SSP and Simley came to a dramatic end Friday afternoon at Inver Wood as the two teams meet to decide the winner of the Agnes Cup. After suffering a 3 stroke loss to the Packers on Thursday, the Simley Girls golfers responded by posting some of the best scores of the year. The team was lead by medalist Olivia Rud and supported with fantastic rounds from seniors Riley Swenson, Maria Paulson, and Kaitlin Pfeffer. Junior Madi Moland, Sophomore Maya Bernstein, and Freshman Emma Johnson added solid scores to give the team an impressive 17 stroke victory over the Packers, and to bring the Agnes Cup back to Simley! How about those Simley Boys Golfers! The unembellished truth is that the Spartans shattered the all-time 18 hole team record by 14 strokes in shooting 299 at Tanner's Brook on Wednesday. That staggering score allowed the boys golf team to win the Classic Suburban Conference Tournament for the first time in school history and end the remarkable 2014 season 2nd in the conference behind only perennial champion Hill-Murray. The Spartans were led by some stellar senior performances including: Senior Garrett Anderson, after an opening bogey, entered the grind zone and finished with 73, which was tied by Senior Nick Kemp who added dead-eye putting to a two-week stretch of outstanding ball striking. Junior Aaron Leafgren's gargantuan drives found his own fairway leading to a silky 76 and Senior Nick Battis and Sophomore Harrison Cooper both carded efficient 77's, known as "The Strip" on tour. Seniors Bryan Chirhart and Mitch Vogel were also on hand to share in the team's well deserved victory. (5-23-14)
Great job Simley Boys Golf for its 19 stroke win over conference rivals South St. Paul and Tartan on Friday at Inverwood. The match included a one over par 37 by Senior Nick Kemp and a 39 by Junior Aaron Leafgren. The highlight of the day, however, was the two under par 34 posted by Sophomore Harrison Cooper, tying an all-time school record originally set by Matt Stangl in 1998. (5-16-14)
Congratulations to the Simley Boys Golf Team for defeating South St. Paul in horrible conditions at Southview Country Club on Thursday. The Spartans were led by team medalist Senior Mitch Vogel. (5-16-14)

Congratulations to the Simley Golf team for recording its 2nd best team score in the history of the program at Crystal Lakes on Wednesday in the driving rain carding a 151. Simley has had the medalist at every one of its matches this season, this time Sophomore Harrison Cooper with an even par 36. Seniors Nick Battis, Bryan Chirhart, and Nick Kemp shot and 37, 38 and 40 to round out the near record setting performance. (4-24-14)
